Reviewed by Megan Mullaly - Caution: The Gene Rippers may cause uncontrollable dancing! Consider yourself warned! All joking aside, you have to take this band seriously - they're just too good to dismiss. They have an infectious style that fuses poppy-rock, reggae, and is that a hint of surf style? Either way, they're nothing but fun. The track 'Are You Okay' is a little reminiscent of classic Treble Charger, but without the sound of rapidly inflating egos. 'Be Careful!' and 'End Of Time' may inspire you to go outside and act crazy in the sunshine (wash your car & spray the neighbors with the hose). You're not going to be able to sit still if you're in the same room with this band; check out 'Good Bye Friend' for a more rock-y sound or 'Why Not' for a spicier, more skank-dancing vibe. The Gene Rippers have such an accessible and playful style that I found my mother bopping around the house after checking it out - now you tell me that isn't catchy! UPDATE: The Gene Rippers are currently defunct. They have since reinvented themselves as the Travelling Salesmen. |
